We are very please to announce that our Public Service Announcement (television commercial) produced for HIHAF by Roland Joseph Multimedia, has been nominated for a 2008 “Positively Outstanding Programming” (POP) Award.  The national POP award was created “to honor cable television’s invaluable contributions to the fight against HIV/AIDS.”  Past honorees include CNN’s “Where Have All The Parents Gone?, MTV’s “Fight for Her Rights”, Showtime’s “Three Needles”, and HBO’s “Angels In America”.

HIHAF received a grant from Cable Positive, the cable industry’s AIDS action organization, to produce a two part series public service announcement targeting our local, island audiences. This project is the first PSA series of its kind to be produced in both the English and Hawaiian languages.

The English version PSA, informally titled “Know”, first appeared as part of the Kama’aina Backroads special edition Merrie Monarch show back in April which aired state-wide on OC16 and at various mainland locations. As a result of this air time, the PSA was submitted to the POP Awards committee for consideration.

The HIHAF PSA is among only 4 national nominees in its category and the first to ever be nominated from Hawaii.  Winners will be announced at Cable Positive’s POP Awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 in New York City.  For more information regarding the POP Awards Ceremony, please go to Cable Positive’s website: http://www.cablepositive.org/programs-pop.html.

Both PSA’s produced as part of this collaborative project are due to air statewide beginning mid-June thanks to the generous contribution of air time on the part of Oceanic Time Warner Cable. The key message to these PSA’s is it is important to know your HIV status. One in four people have HIV and don’t even know it – there are usually no symptoms for the first 10 years of infection. We all need to be responsible and take the test.
